South Y Detour opens this month in Carlsbad

Carlsbad, NM – As the Brine Well mitigation project takes place, the New Mexico Department of Transportation wants to provide a safe, alternate route to the traveling public.

The department will shift traffic slightly at the South Y intersection in Carlsbad this month.  This shift in traffic will accommodate the Carlsbad Brine Well mitigation project taking place adjacent to the highway.

Approximately 15,000 vehicles travel through the intersection daily and the NMDOT wants to ensure that traffic is minimally impacted while work is taking place.

“Geometrically, the intersection is nearly the same as it is currently,” said Tim Parker, District Two Engineer.  “Modifications included moving the northbound ramp connecting U.S. 62/180 to U.S. 285 Loving Highway slightly to accommodate the work site for the contractor.”

The New Mexico Department of Transportation in coordination with the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resourced Department (EMNRD) determined the appropriate traffic control plan during the Carlsbad Brine Well Remediation project.  The plan keeps all four lanes of traffic open with minimal impact to traffic in the area.
