On October 25th, 2001, the Project Playground Committee held a Design Day. An architect from Leathers & Associates spent a very long day meeting with the committee and school children to gather ideas for the playground. By the end of the day, a preliminary design was presented to the community. The playground design is unique in its incorporation of architectural features of Carlsbad, such as caves and rock climbing areas and the flumes.
With a cost of $250,000 coming from private and public donations as well as various fund raising efforts, Playground on the Pecos became a reality September 15, 2002. Built between September 5, 2002 and September 15, 2002 it was a unique community-based project assisted several volunteer craftsmen. Made primarily of wood, it has 15,000 square feet of towers, swings, slides and hiding places. The playground is also monitored by camera for safety concerns by the staff at the Riverwalk Recreation Center.
Located on the east bank, children and adults alike can enjoy the scenic view of the majestic Pecos River while enjoying the adventures offered by the playground.
