Mayor Janway’s June 1 Update

Where do residents of the Permian Basin go when they want to take a short vacation? According to the Odessa American’s annual “Reader’s Choice” award, they come to Carlsbad. Once again, the newspaper’s readers picked our city for the “Best Day Trip” award. We have been selected for this multiple times over the past decade, and we are very proud of this honor.

The Lake Carlsbad Beach area is an especially popular destination for families wanting to take a short trip out of town, with visitors enjoying our water park, swimming area, splash pads, volleyball, pickleball courts and more. The recent return of boat rides offered through the Chamber of Commerce, as well as paddleboat and other rentals offered by the River Hut, provides additional options for our visiting guests. We know that the miniature golf course is also popular for both our residents and visitors. We’re so fortunate to have the Pecos River run through our community – and we’re proud to be selected as the spot for the best “day trip.”

There’s a new option being provided for anyone interested in growing a small business. An information session about the ConocoPhillips Small Biz Builder will be held in Carlsbad on Sept. 13, from 1:30-3 p.m. at ConocoPhillips’ Carlsbad Office, 1401 Commerce Street.

These classes will provide information about how small financial institutions make lending decisions and provide more information about the training programs.  A registration page is set up online, but you can also register by emailing Sandra Gonzales at sgonzales@liftfund.com or visiting conocophllips.com/smallbizbuilder.

Chevron employees and their families recently had a volunteer day at the Carlsbad Assistance League, in preparation for the upcoming “Operation School Bell” this Friday, August 4. Chevron volunteers assembled 1,000 hygiene kits, along with preparing clothing for the children’s bags of new clothes, shoes and winter jackets. Chevron has been funding Operation School Bell for the past few years and volunteering to get kids ready for school.  Chevron also recently made a very generous donation to Carlsbad’s Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Committee.

Several Carlsbad organizations, including the Assistance League and the United Way, are all working hard to make sure that all of Carlsbad’s children are prepared for the upcoming school year. In addition to Chevron, several other groups have really stepped forward to provide incredible assistance. We look forward to talking more about some of these efforts throughout the week.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
