Eddy County is leading the nation in rig count again, according to data compiled by the Carlsbad Department of Development. The CDOD’s data, based on the Baker Hughes North America Rig data, shows Eddy County at 56 rigs for the running ten-year active rig count. Lea County is second at 49, while Reeves County in Texas is third at 44.
We love seeing new businesses come to our area to take advantage of all the opportunity here. Last week, we met Riley Hunter, Clay Moore and Sara Moore, who opened up a United Pump and Supply office in Carlsbad. They have had a great success story in Odessa and they say they are excited about this new opportunity here.
We also enjoyed recently meeting with Blake McMillen, the district manager for Baker Hughes, who recently set up offices in Carlsbad. Blake was already getting involved in the community by coaching at the Bob Forrest Sports Complex. There are so many great new businesses moving here and setting up offices. I also recently spoke with someone out of the Equipment Share office, who said their office in Carlsbad is the busiest of all their companies. Carlsbad continues to serve as the epicenter of our nation’s energy industry.
As we’ve done in the past, we’re in the process of planning our annual energy summit. Last year, Steve Stucker served as our keynote speaker, and we had an incredibly interesting group of panelists. This year’s event will be on Oct. 19. We certainly welcome ideas on how we can make the summit informative and fun at the same time. Thanks again to Oran Means, who first came up with the idea to hold an energy summit in Carlsbad. The event has been an incredible success ever since. Thanks again to the many sponsors who allow us to make attendance free.

On Tuesday, members of the Salado Isolation Mining Contractors (SIMCO) leadership team attended the City Council meeting. SIMCO presented a $50,000 donation, which will go toward the construction of a new splash pad near Friendship Park. This will be a splash pad specially designed to accommodate children with disabilities. Special thanks to Ken Harrawood and George Rangel, who joined us from SIMCO, and Susan Crockett, who is leading the fundraising efforts.
SIMCO’s donation means we’ll be able to move forward with construction, but fundraising efforts are ongoing. We’re very excited about this new splash pad.
