Update 5-9-23

One of the many highlights of the weekend was the “Passport to Adventure,” which was hosted by a group including Carlsbad Municipal Schools and the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Foundation. The event was sponsored by SIMCO, Marathon Oil, Chevron, the Eddy County Sheriff’s Posse, Albertsons, Garcampken’s Blog and a number of private donors. Groups including Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, the Bureau of Land Management and many others offered science experiments, while students received books and entered drawings for Kindles.

Decorations at the Riverwalk Recreation Center looked great, and the event drew 353 participants. Special thanks to Dr. Joy James-Foster, Renee Madrid and everyone with the Riverwalk Recreation Center, LaVern Shan, and the many other volunteers who made this event a success.

In baseball, Carlsbad’s varsity bested Cibola, 11-1 and 10-0, in the first round of this year’s 5A playoffs. The Cavemen will play Centennial on May 11 a.m. beginning at 10 a.m. in Albuquerque. In the second game, Mack Mabrey hit two home runs to lead the way, while Tristin Thomas and Hazen Wright pitched for Carlsbad.

The Carlsbad Cavegirls won a nailbiter over Cleveland, 2-1, in extra innings on Friday night. Faith Aragon sent the game to extra innings with a home run and Hannah Martinez had the winning base hit RBI. The Cavegirls will play Cibola on May 11 with games beginning at 3 p.m. Congratulations to the Cavegirls on winning such a hard fought battle.

Carlsbad’s tennis teams both completed their seasons this weekend at the state tournament. The Cavemen beat Centennial in the first round to reach the semifinals, where they lost to Farmington. The Cavegirls were eliminated the previous day in the state tournament. We hope to have track results for you later this week.

Just a reminder that the Carlsbad Water Park will open its doors on Memorial Day weekend, May 27. Admission is just $5. Hours for the water park are Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. We will also be open on Mondays associated with holidays, including Memorial Day (May 29) and July 3.

Both of Carlsbad’s splash pads are now open for business- we have a splash pad near the beach bandshell, and there is another one at the sports complex. As you have also heard, we are currently working on another splash bad near Friendship Park. We’ll have more information on that soon.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
