Update 5-2-23

Congratulations to the Carlsbad Cavegirls and Carlsbad Cavemen softball and baseball teams, who both won district over the weekend.

The Cavegirls have the number 2 seed in the 5A softball tournament. They’ll open up against Cleveland at home.  Centennial has the state’s top seed.  Over the weekend, the Cavegirls beat Hobbs, 21-1 and 12-0, to finish with a perfect 12-0 record in district. The girls have a 24-2 record overall.

The Carlsbad Cavemen have the number three seed on the baseball side. They’ll host Cibola on Friday and Saturday. Rio Rancho has the state’s top seed this year, followed by La Cueva. Carlsbad recorded 6-4 and 9-1 wins over Hobbs over the weekend to clinch the district championsip. The Cavemen have a 21-5 record for the season and are 8-1 in district.

There’s an informative article going around that was sent out by the New Mexico Activities Association on April 21. According to the article, Carlsbad reached 1,401 wins that weekend after beating Roswell High twice. According to the National Federation of State High School’s record book, the Cavemen became the sixth school nationally to win 1,400 or more games all time. Carlsbad has a record 63 state tournament appearances over 77 years of competition. They only have three losing seasons. Thanks to the NMAA for putting together this great list of facts.

What’s going on at the Halagueno Arts Park? You have probably spotted the construction going in over the performance stages.

The City received an Outdoor Recreation Trails grant award from the state’s Economic Development Department’s Outdoor Recreation Division. The City was one of 25 organizations awarded this great. The City also covered additional costs in order to complete this project. These structures will provide some much-needed shade and protection from the sun during events at the Halagueno Arts Park. Thanks again to the members of the Mayor’s Fine Arts Acquisition and Vetting Committee for all of their hard work. Community FAAV members are Carla Dungan, Kat Davis, Cindy Elkins, Mary Garwood, Julia Heaton, Judy Murray, Linda Pruitt and Wren Stroud.

What another busy weekend in Carlsbad. The City of Carlsbad held a Hall of Fame induction for Gary Forrest at the Museum, and the Carlsbad Public Library held an excellent touch a truck event at the civic center. The community theater and the high school theater both had plays going on this weekend, and the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce’s brewfest was extremely well attended. Upcoming activities for this weekend includes baseball and softball playoffs, dance recitals, “Baby Animal Day” at the Balzano vineyards, a “Passport to Adventure” STEM and literacy event at the Riverwalk Recreation Center, and many more activities.

Sincerely, Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
