Carlsbad had three members of its fire department who spent the past two weeks at the National Fire Academy, located in Emmitsburg, Maryland. This is the nation’s best training academy for advanced level emergency response courses. Once accepted, tuition and stay on campus are paid for by the U.S. Fire Administration.

Congratulations to Carlsbad Battalion Chief Alex Luna, Lieutenant Gerard Jaquez and Assistant Chief John Majerus on their selection and completion of this important class. This training will help the Carlsbad Fire Department better respond to potential HazMat emergencies in the area.

Many residents of Carlsbad and the surrounding area reported hearing an explosion on Wednesday at around noon. According to Eddy County, sheriff’s deputies investigating the explosion off of Seven Rivers highway found a company utilizing explosives at a gravel quarry. There was no hazard to the community, but the company was advised of fire code requirements. No damage or injuries were reported. The Eddy County Fire and Rescue Department also asked to thank members of the public, who assisted with reporting their concerns.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
