Congratulations to everyone involved with “Occupation Day” at Carlsbad High School on Wednesday. The City of Carlsbad was well represented, including by the Carlsbad Fire Department, who talked to students about careers in fire and EMS, gave tours of vehicles and let them try on firefighting gear. The event was coordinated by the lead teachers for Carlsbad’s academies.
Occupation Day is one of many efforts being put forth right now to help students in high school and college prepare for the workforce. At the same time, Southeast New Mexico College is currently developing a more extensive vocational program, which will include a new training facility. On Wednesday night, the college held a career and transfer day, which provided information about career choices or transferring to a four-year school.
SENMC also recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. The college officially became independent on April 10, 2022. This year, the college opened registration for the fall semester that was entirely separate from New Mexico State University. There’s been a lot of work over the past three years put in by the local faculty and staff, but SENMC and Carlsbad have a lot to be proud of in terms of how much they’ve moved forward. Special thanks to the SENMC board: Dr. Ned Elkins, Tiffany Frintz, Bill Murrill, Mark Cage and Sarah Bowman.
However, our college and high school aren’t the only places where students are learning about jobs. Recently, students at Desert Willow were paid a visit by ConocoPhillips for career day. The students learned about what it’s like to work in the field, how technology is used, and were taught about a day in the life as an engineer might go. Finally, they had a chance to see the company’s in-house drone take flight.

Carlsbad’s baseball and softball teams are having an excellent district run so far. Most recently, the Cavemen beat Clovis, 14-2, 12-1 and 6-0, and they are now ranked third in the state. They’re now in the process of playing Roswell, who beat Hobbs, 2-1, last week.
The Cavegirls are now 18-2 for the season and are ranked second in the state. Last week, they beat Roswell twice, and they beat Hobbs twice this week. The Cavegirls are now 6-0 in conference play. They play two games against Clovis this weekend.
Former Carlsbad standout Trevor Rogers was removed from his start Wednesday after throwing just 58 pitches in three innings. The Miami Marlins later announced that the removal was due to left forearm tightness. He was placed on the injured list, but a spokesman for the Marlins said he will be back in a matter of weeks. Rogers had fanned three batters prior to his removal.
Sincerely,
Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
