Update 4-12-23

There are several important charity golf tournaments coming up, including one that will help a very special young man.

The “Tee It Up for Luke” charity golf tournament will go to benefit a 2-year-old boy who is the son of a City of Carlsbad Firefighter. The little boy was recently diagnosed with cancer, and the family is travelling to get the treatment he needs. Even if you can’t make the golf tournament, please consider supporting this worthwhile cause. Donations for this event can be mailed to 401 S. Halagueno St.- please make checks out to Local #1687 with a memo that states “Tee It Up For Luke.” The 3 person scramble, which will take place at the Lake Carlsbad Municipal Golf Course, will include a silent auction and lunch.

There are also still openings at the 2023 Mayor’s Miniature Golf Tournament, being held on April 15. Thanks to donations from Intrepid, CNB Bank and Farm Bureau Financial Services: Bowen Insurance, there will be first, second and third prizes for each of the three age groups 6-9, 10-13 and 14-17.

This tournament will take place at the Carlsbad Miniature Golf Course and feature a 10 a.m. shotgun start. For more information, please call JW at (575) 887-6516. This will be the course’s first miniature golf tournament, so winners will be making history.

The CHS Cheer Golf Tournament is scheduled for May 13. This will be a four-person scramble held at Riverside Country Club.

There have been some changes made to our Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony this year. After speaking with some additional veterans groups and listening to their requests, the event has been adjusted. The May 29 parade will start at 9 a.m. at P.R. Leyva (lineup begins at 8 a.m.) and head to the Carlsbad Cemetery. A ceremony will take place at the new Carlsbad Veterans Memorial Day Cemetery there. Thank you to Alberto Villegas for all of his hard work on our annual Memorial Day and Veterans Day events. For more information, please call (575) 361-5848.

The day before, at the Beach Bandshell, there will be a Memorial Day Concert hosted by musician Gil Karson. The free concert will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and include performances by the Beer Cousins, The Groove, Jth5andthe77Riders, and, of course, Gil Karson and the Karson City Rebels. This will be a great way to celebrate Memorial Day in Carlsbad, and we hope you’ll attend.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
