Update 3-30-23

On Wednesday night, we received the terrible news that a young man who is a student at Carlsbad High School lost his life in a shooting. We have spoken with the school district and understand that a number of counselors were on site at Carlsbad High School this Thursday and Friday  to provide support to students.

It is, of course, very important to remember that assistance is also available for the teachers and adults at the school, who are impacted by these tragedies as well. The Carlsbad Police Department is continuing to investigate this incident, but an arrest has been made. We know this young man was very well loved by his friends and family, and very involved in our community. We offer our deepest condolences to every single person impacted by this tragedy. The City of Carlsbad will be happy to offer assistance in any way possible.

Free books will soon be available for local students. The Carlsbad MLK Foundation, in partnership with Carlsbad Municipal Schools, will be hosting a “Passport to Adventure” event from 1-3 p.m. May 6 at the Riverwalk Recreation Center. This event will include free book giveaways, STEM and reading activities for grades K-5, snacks and prize giveaways. The focus, in terms of books, will be from the “Magic School Bus” series. We hope you’ll swing by the Riverwalk Recreation Center that day to support one local organization’s efforts to improve on literacy. We understand that the organization is also looking for additional volunteers and sponsors.

Baseball season is underway, and Trevor Rogers is listed as the probable starter for the Miami Marlins in their game on Sunday, April 2 against the New York Mets. Rogers will be pitching at home during his expected first game of the year. The Marlins kicked off their season on Thursday with a home game against the Mets.

On a local level, the Carlsbad Cavemen are enjoying a quiet baseball week. The Cavemen reached the finals of the Sal Puentes Memorial Tournament Last weekend, but fell to Rio Rancho, 17-10. Carlsbad, 13-3, will host Artesia next Thursday. The Carlsbad Cavegirls took over the Kristin Griego Memorial Softball Tournament in Rio Rancho this past weekend. The Cavegirls, 11-2, shut down Alamogordo, 10-0, in the tournament final to cruise to victory. They hosted Artesia on Thursday night and will play Clovis on April 11. Best of luck to all of our local athletics teams.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
