Update 3-23-23

The Waste isolation Pilot Plant will be holding a community forum and open house this Thursday in Hobbs. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the event will take place at the Hobbs Country Club (5001 W. Carlsbad Highway). A WIPP truck, with empty casks, will be parked outside of the venue, so those interested can see safety components of the WIPP Transportation System.

For those of you who can’t make the trip to Hobbs, you can register to view the forum online here: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcucO2rqz0oGdP1Q77QGz-lBoqbZiNjmCBk. WIPP holds public meetings throughout the year at a variety of locations, including Carlsbad and Santa Fe. It’s very important that WIPP’s educational outreach efforts continue to the greatest extent possible, as the nuclear industry is clearly a field where there are a large number of misunderstandings.

If you are unable to make it Thursday, WIPP’s Leadership Team will also be holding an After Hours Meet & Greet from 5:30-6:30 p.m. April 4 at the Skeen Whitlock Building in Carlsbad. As many of you know, WIPP recently completed a transition to a new management and operations contractor- SIMCO, and we’d like to make sure everyone feels welcome in Carlsbad. To attend this event, please RSVP to ekta.bhakta@wipp.ws.

We have some sad news on the business front. Carlsbad’s La Cueva Pet Center, off of Pierce Street, is set to close at the end of March due to the retirement of veterinarian Dr. Marvin Albright. This is Dr. Albright’s second time to operate in Carlsbad – he first arrived here in 1994 and later opened the La Cueva Pet Care Center in 2016. Carlsbad’s remaining Animal Clinics include Weldon Veterinary Care and Carlsbad Animal Clinic.
Thank you to Dr. Albright for his many years of service to Carlsbad’s residents and their animals. The La Cueva building is a beautiful facility, and this is a growing market, so let’s hope that more animal care facilities will soon decide to open their doors in Carlsbad.

We would also like to thank the family of Patsy Grantner for her many years of service to the children of Carlsbad. Patsy spent more than 40 years teaching religious education at San Jose Catholic Church. She opened “Mom’s Day Out” in 1991, which is now San Jose Child Care.

Sadly, Patsy passed away earlier this month, and funeral services were held last week. We offer our condolences to her husband, Jim, and to her family and friends. Patsy’s deep faith was shared at her funeral mass last week, as well as her commitment to this community. She will be greatly missed.

Sincerely, Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
