Update 2-24-23

Congratulations to all members of Carlsbad’s Business Professionals of America Program, who recently competed at the state leadership conference in Albuquerque. Carlsbad High School won the BPA state championship for the fourth consecutive year and several Carlsbad students were elected to state office.

Students from Carlsbad’s Early College High School and P.R. Leyva Intermediate School also competed and did well. BPA Advisor for the Carlsbad High School chapter, Terry Carrera, is also Chair of the NM BPA Board.  Carlsbad High School student Mia Peacock was recognized as the most valuable NMBPA member, while Bruce Daughtry was selected as an honorary member. Peacock scored the highest score in the state on the merit scholar exam, and Miguel Beltran, Yuki Ye and Raj Bhakta all placed in the top ten.

Additionally, Aniah Sepulveda and Monica Frausto were both elected to the state board of directors.

Highlights from the Early College High School included the web design team of Maranda Campbell, Ella Chapler and Leonela Romero Calenche placing first. Hanli Norman and Imarii Orozco’s presentation team also took first place. For P.R. Leyva, Alyssa Balencia finished first place in word processing and second in digital citizenship. Many more students from all of Carlsbad’s schools received recognition at the event, and we should all be proud of their accomplishments.

If you’ve been following this year’s state legislative session, State Rep. Cathrynn Brown has been a vocal advocate of adding finance classes to high school requirements. This is a great idea, and Carlsbad’s BPA students are already off to a good start.

We visited the college recently to participate in a discussion about the development of a more extensive vocational program. Dr. Beardmore and everyone at SENMC are doing a great job, and we’re proud to have him serving in this community.
