Update 1-29-23

Here’s a quick business update on a few spots:

There’s a new soda store coming to Carlsbad. “Sips Sodas and Snacks” is going to be located at 1095 N. Canal Street, and you can get more information from their web page at https://sipsodas.com/menu/

According to the web page, you’ll be able to order a soda at the store and then add flavors like pear, orange or banana to the drink. There are also some specialty soda drink orders on the menu. Additionally, items such as donuts, popcorn and ice cream will also be served.

The establishment is currently in the process of hiring its employees, and says it plans to have its team ready by next week. We look forward to an opening soon.

HTeaO Carlsbad is also moving forward toward completion and hopes to open soon at 1103 South Canal St. This location will serve 24 flavors of fresh tea. Additional construction has also been taking place on the road in front of the business.

Carlsbad attorney Nate Banks is helping open up a new business off of Canal Street called the Caveman Cigar Lounge. According to Banks, this business will open in early February and will include indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a full walk-in humidor. Banks also said the business plans to offer cigar classes for those who wish to learn more.

We’ve also been asked to help let everyone know that Carlsbad American Legion Post 7 is encouraging members and new members to support the Post, which is located at 2605 Legion Avenue. The group is moving back into being in full swing since the COVID shutdowns and is planning fundraisers.

Legion Office hours are Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to noon. For more information on how you can join the Legion, please call (575) 885-2493. The Legion is planning on starting a Tardeada, which will feature music and dancing. Carlsbad’s Legion Post has an outstanding history of being involved in our community, and we hope you’ll contact them if you are interested.

Finally, Devon Energy has opened applications for its 2023 grants to organizations advancing diversity, equity and inclusion.  Last year, Devon assisted several groups in Carlsbad and Southeast New Mexico with this grant, so we encourage you to apply.

The 2023 grant application closes Friday,  Feb.  24,  and  all applicants will be notified if they were awarded a grant by April 1.  For more information and to apply, visit devonenergy.com/sustainability/social/philanthropy. Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
