Carlsbad residents woke up to snow on Tuesday morning.
According to Carlsbad Fire Chief Ken Ahrens, weather reports now indicate that some portions of Carlsbad and the surrounding area are expected to get up to four inches of snow. There are currently no road closures in our area (as of Tuesday morning), but roads are wet, with difficult driving conditions throughout Eddy County. With temperatures forecasted to be below freezing tonight, we anticipate icy roads tomorrow (Wednesday morning). Please be especially cautious while driving in the Queen area or the Guadalupe Mountains, and check for updates before you drive.
Some government agencies and private businesses went to work on two-hour delays on Tuesday. As parents already know, Carlsbad Municipal Schools (as well as JMA) cancelled school on Tuesday. Loving also cancelled school, but Artesia remained open. Carlsbad High School’s basketball games were also cancelled Tuesday evening. The games will be rescheduled at a later date. We will keep you advised of any major changes on our end caused by inclement weather.

Congratulations to Carlsbad Caverns National Park. The nearby national park was recently listed by “RV Magazine” as having the No. 1 “visitor’s center that you don’t want to miss.” According to the authors, the “Hidden World” video documentary, as well as hand-on geology and biology displays, makes the center well worth a visit. The article also encourages visitors to check out the park’s gift shop. To read the article, please visit https://rvlife.com/visitor-centers-near-rv-parks/
Carlsbad Caverns National Park is celebrating its 100 anniversary this year, and activities are planned each month.

Congratulations as well to Trent Cornum, who was appointed back on Carlsbad’s school board on Tuesday. The District 5 seat was formerly held by Tom Hollis, who left the board in 2022. Cornum previously served on the board, but he had to relinquish his seat when he moved out of his district.
Many members of the community spoke out in support of Cornum at Tuesday’s school board meeting, prior to the board vote. Cornum is an excellent school board member who always does a good job reaching out to his constituents, and we’re glad to have him back. He also has a very involved family, so he’s up to date on everything going around town concerning youth and academics. We look forward to working with our entire school board on developing more options for Carlsbad’s youth.
Sincerely, Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
