Update 10-28-22

The next few days will be important ones for Carlsbad’s football, volleyball and cross-country teams.

On Friday, the Carlsbad Cavemen will host the Hobbs Eagles. The Cavemen are currently ranked seventh in the state, while the Eagles are ranked fourth. The Cavemen (5-4) are coming off a huge win over Las Cruces. Carlsbad and Hobbs are currently tied for second in district, as both teams lost games to the top-ranked Centennial Hawks. Head Coach Oliver Soukup and the Cavemen deserve so much credit for a great season so far.

Ely Asay leads the Cavemen ground game with 1196 yards on 148 carries for 13 touchdowns, Ulysess Mendoza has 585 yards on 140 carriers for 7 touchdowns and Dane Naylor, 634 yards on 117 carries for 6 touchdowns. Quarterback Dane Naylor has connected on 20 of 48 passes for 388 yards and 5 TD’s with 4 interceptions. Leading receivers for the Cavemen have been Asay, who has 9 receptions for 173 yards and two touchdowns, Jose Vasquez 2 receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown, D.J. Moore 2 receptions for 40 yards. Thank you to Don Eskins for helping compile this information.

The district volleyball title will be settled on Tuesday, Nov. 1, in Carlsbad as the Cavegirls host Hobbs. This has been a tremendous year for the Cavegirls. Prior to Thursday night’s game against Roswell, the Cavegirls were 3-1 in district play.

According to online statistics, Cavegirl leaders for 2022 have been, Gracie Eckles 216 kills, 161 digs, 36 blocks, 34 aces and 20 assists; Annika Sowers 158 digs, 92 kills and 27 aces; Sammi Oliver 168 assists and 87 digs; Samantha Rodriguez 115 assists, 83 digs, 32 kills and 26 aces; Carly Younger 72 kills, 59 blocks and 21 aces; Isabelle Kostenbader 34 kills, 28 blocks and 25 Digs and Chinasa Ojiaku 48 blocks and 33 kills. Congratulations to head coach Danelle Morrill and the entire team.

Carlsbad’s cross country team will also have a district meet on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Clovis. Long-time head coach Jesus Fierro does an excellent job, and we look forward to reporting these results.  Best of luck to all of the Cavemen and Cavegirls.

Reminder: Carlsbad’s downtown fall festival is one of the most popular events every October. Numerous businesses join together for a fun, safe trick-or-treating event around the Eddy County Courthouse. This year’s event will begin at 4 p.m. Oct. 28. There will also be a costume contest on the courthouse lawn. It should be a great start to the weekend.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
