Update 10-4-22

Election Day will be Tuesday, Nov. 8, and several key dates are coming up related to that process. Voter registration ends on Oct. 11, and early in person voting and absentee voting also begin that day. Early voting takes place at the Clerk’s Office at 325 S. Main Street or at the Artesia sub office on First Street.

In Carlsbad, voting is handled through the Eddy County Clerk’s Office, Bureau of Elections. All important information is available through the Clerk’s webpage at https://www.co.eddy.nm.us/219/Elections-Voter-Information. You can also call (575) 885-3383. Extended early voting begins on Oct. 22.

One of the most useful features on the county’s page is the ability to see an online sample ballot. This allows you to see in which districts you are located, and you may also directly see what your ballot will look like when you go to vote.

This year, Carlsbad residents will be able to vote on their U.S. Representative, as well as for New Mexico’s Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, State Auditor, State Treasurer, Commissioner of Public Lands and State Representative. All of these races are contested,

There are also two contested State Supreme Court races and two contested Court of Appeals positions. 5th Judicial District voters also have three judicial elections to vote on, as well as local races including county clerk, county assessor, county commissioner and probate judge. There are no City of Carlsbad items on this year’s ballot –that will be next year.

Finally, there are several “down ballot” items, including three constitutional amendments and three bond issues. These bond issues are related to senior center improvements, library improvements, and school improvements, and would therefore have an impact on Carlsbad. The amendments are related to judicial appointments, amending the “anti-donation clause” and distributions for the annual school fund.

The City of Carlsbad assists with the local election process by providing support at the voting convenience stations. On Nov. 8, eligible voters may cast their ballot at any of the locations listed, regardless of where they live in Eddy County. On Nov. 8, polling locations are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Eddy County Clerk Darlene Rosprim and everyone with the Clerk’s Office does a great job.

Please contact the County Clerk’s office if you have any additional questions about voter registration, voting location or the ballot. There are some extremely important selections to be made this year, and a high turnout for Eddy County is important.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
