Update 9-1-22

While the past week’s rain has been more than welcome, many of us know that we have a great deal of yard work on the horizon. Keeping weeds under control isn’t just good for the sake of appearance, it also removes a habitat for mosquitos and pests.

The City of Carlsbad has a good support system when it comes to pick up for all of the yard work that will likely be taking place over the next few weeks across Carlsbad. Waste items should be taken to the front curb for grappler service. You can reach our grappler by calling 311 on a landline or (575) 887-1200 from a cell phone. There’s also an online registration form at www.egovlink.com/carlsbad. Additionally, the City of Carlsbad’s convenience station is now open seven days a week. The convenience station is located at 301 E. Plaza St.

On the same note, there will be numerous opportunities to help clean up at National Public Lands Day, Sept. 17 through 24. This is a little different setup than some other cleanup activities. Individuals and groups can organize cleanup events themselves and then share their accomplishments. The event is being organized by the BLM, Keep Carlsbad Beautiful, Artesia Clean and Beautiful and Eddy County. For more information, please contact Tracy Hughes at (575) 988-2953 or email tshughes@blm.gov.

Thank you to Gerry Moore, who is the owner of Burger Cave. During the COVID-19 shutdowns, Gerry provided numerous free meals to teachers, families, health care employees and first responders who weren’t able to get out of the house. This amounted to tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of donated food. We’re glad to have Gerry and so many other local business owners supporting Carlsbad.

Just a reminder that we’ll have, weather permitting, DJ Malory Anaya performing in our summer concert series from 7-9 p.m. this Saturday. We’ll wrap up our summer concert series the following Sunday, Sept. 11, with a performance by Grupo Maldad from 6-8 p.m. Our concert series has been very popular, and we’ll certainly plan to continue it in the future.

This weekend’s list of activities also includes the Carlsbad Community Theatre’s Marienda 2022 at 6 p.m.  Friday at the theatre. This will be an opportunity to purchase season tickets and learn about the theatre’s new season.

Best of luck to all of the Cavemen and Cavegirl sports teams playing this weekend. The Cavemen football team has its first home game Friday against Volcano Vista. Homecoming will be the following weekend.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
