We’re just a month away from Carlsbad’s annual Relay for Life celebration. The event has typically taken place in the spring, but, as with many events, there has been a recent reshuffling of schedules due to COVID-19. Relay for Life is set for Sept. 23 at the Carlsbad Beach.

Relay for Life is an annual fundraiser that supports research into curing cancer and providing assistance to those who are battling cancer. Supporters walk laps around the park to raise awareness and funds.  Organizer Angela Campos says she’s especially interested in getting everyone registered as soon as possible through the webpage relayforlife.org. All registration is online and survivors will have their shirts mailed to them, so the sooner they register the better.

We hope you’ll participate in Carlsbad’s Relay for Life this year. For more information, please call Campos at (575) 200-8582.

Carlsbad’s Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Committee is holding a membership drive on Sunday, Aug. 29 from 5:30-7:30 at the Carlsbad Beach Bandshell. Annual membership is just $10. Members of the scholarship committee will be playing a recording of Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech in celebration of the 59th anniversary of that speech.

If you aren’t able to make it, membership contributions may also be submitted to: MLK JR. Scholarship, PO Box 503, Carlsbad NM 88221-0503. Dr. Joy James-Foster chairs this organization, but Captain James Williams and Julia Williams have helped organize MLK events for many years. Julia Williams remains highly involved in the organization.

Summer Concert Series: We have two concerts remaining this summer. DJ Malory Anaya will be performing from 7-9 p.m. on Sept. 3 at the water park gazebo. Grupo Maldad, who rained out last week, will perform from 6-8 pm. on Sunday, Sept. 11. This will be our first Sunday Summer Concert Series at the water park gazebo, so we’re very excited.

We’ve been asked to remind you that there will be no Farmer’s Market this week (8-25-22) because MainStreet is busy getting ready for its two day Firefighter Combat Challenge on Friday and Saturday. In addition to the competition, three great bands- the Jack Nelson Band, Grupo Maldad and Jhett Black will be performing Friday and Saturday. MainStreet has also added a Friday option for the charity relay challenge. There will also be food trucks and a beer garden. It will be another great weekend in Carlsbad.  For more information, please visit https://www.facebook.com/CarlsbadMainStreet

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
