On Thursday, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce held its annual banquet. One of the evening’s most special recognitions, one named in honor of Janell Whitlock, went to Carlsbad resident Mike Currier. This was an extremely well deserved honor.

Janell sadly passed away shortly after receiving the very first of the Chamber’s awards, which was named for her in recognition of her numerous contributions to the community. Our municipal annex was also named after Janell, and we still miss her a great deal.

Mike Currier is a very well deserving recipient of this annual award. He’s been the master of ceremonies at almost every event in Carlsbad. He’s widely respected and recognized for his skills as an emcee and moderator. He’s also a highly successful businessman who has been active in Carlsbad Rotary, the Carlsbad Department of Development and the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce.

Mike previously served as the national president of the American Land Title Association and as the president of the New Mexico Land Title Association. His success as a businessman saw him inducted into NMMI’s hall of fame.

You can’t talk about Mike without talking about Linnie Davis Currier, who sadly passed away in 2012. Mike and Linnie received the Humanitarian Award through the Carlsbad Community Foundation. Linnie was a tremendous advocate for horses and animals. Their daughter, Missi, has been following in her parents’ footsteps in many ways in terms of her dedication to Carlsbad.

Mike Currier’s selection to be honored by the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce was very well deserved. Congratulations as well to Ekta Bhakta on a successful year as the Chamber’s board president. We look forward to working with new president David Beaty and everyone at the Chamber.

The City of Carlsbad has been awarded a federal grant through the Byrne Discretionary Community Project Funding. This $400,000 allocation, with council approval, will provide the City with the needed funding to complete the Public Safety Hand-held Radio Upgrade for the Carlsbad Fire Department and Carlsbad Police Department. These upgrades will help improve on community safety. Thank you to Angie Barrios-Testa and our finance department for working with our first responders to develop this application. Special thanks to the members of our Congressional delegation and their staff, who have helped keep us aware of these opportunities. City Council will now review the conditions of this grant at a future date and decide whether or not to accept them.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
