6-6-22

As reported in media, Carlsbad High School’s Nolan Perry has been announced as the 2021-22 Gatorade New Mexico Baseball Player of the Year. Perry is the sixth Gatorade New Mexico Player of the Year to be chosen from Carlsbad High School.

The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also academic achievement and exemplary character. Perry is now a finalist for the national player of the year process.

This year, Perry posted a .436 batting average with eight home runs, 37 runs scored and 34 RBI as the Cavemen went on to a 27-4 record and state championship. As a pitcher, he had a 10-1 record with a 0.42 ERA and 115 strikeouts.

Perry also maintained a 3.04 GPA in the classroom. He has signed a Letter of Intent to play baseball on scholarship at Texas Tech this fall.

Another Carlsbad student, Tylen Gonzalez, has signed to play football with the University of Arizona. The 6-6, 250 pound defensive lineman also plays on Carlsbad’s basketball team. He’s the first player from New Mexico to be recruited by the University of Arizona for football in a decade. Congratulations to both of these athletes.

Our summer concert series began this past weekend with an outstanding performance by LastChild and JJ Aguilar. These free concerts are taking place on Saturdays from 7-9 p.m. at the new gazebo near the Carlsbad Water Park. We received great feedback about this concert. We won’t have a summer concert this weekend because one of the biggest musical events of the year – CavernFest, will be going on downtown.

In fact, LastChild will be performing on Friday, as will JD and the Badlands and Curtis Grimes. Saturday’s performances will include the River Bed, the Cody Zane Wells Band, Melissa Jones Auld, Jake Bush, Jordan Nix, Mariachi Tapatio, Holly Tucker and, finally, the Randy Rogers Band. A.R. Foreman Construction is the event sponsor for this year’s CavernFest. CavernFest also includes a huge collection of inflatables and other fun activities for kids. Keep Carlsbad Beautiful is also holding a “Picture the Pecos” photo contest. There’s a black and white and a color category. First prize in each category is $250, and five photos are allowed per category. The contest began June 1 and will run through mid September. Photo entries can be sent to welovethepecos@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing numerous photos of our beautiful river and beach area.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
