Update 3-25-22

We’ve received an exceptionally high number of calls about various scams over the past few days, so we want to devote this space to reminding everyone to be careful.

There were, for example, multiple people attempting to sell tickets to Thursday’s concert who were just trying to get someone to send them money online. While there were also some people actually selling tickets, a larger number of people didn’t appear to actually have tickets for sale.

We have also received calls from residents who are being contacted by someone claiming to be from Xcel Energy demanding an immediate payment. These individuals are trying to get people to send money using one or more payment aps to a fictional account.  These are not actual Xcel Energy employees.

We have reached out to Xcel to get additional information on how the electric company does handle collections and will provide more information. Xcel’s Customer Service line can be reached at 1-800-895-4999 or you can visit https://my.xcelenergy.com/customersupport/s/avoiding-scams

In general, if someone is claiming to represent a company, you can always hang up and call the company using an official number. Regarding sales attempts online, check someone’s profile to see if the person actually appears to be a resident of the region.  In general, if you have any doubts about contacts such as these, please trust your instincts and avoid sending money.

The Cavern City and Lea County Child Advocacy Centers are excited to present the annual Crimes Against Children Conference in Hobbs on March 31 and April 1.

This event is for the entire community, but especially those that work with children daily. Encourage the educators, nurses, daycare providers, church leaders, etc. in your life to attend this invaluable learning experience. Lunch will be provided.

Please go to www.senmcac.com/conference-2022 to register.

According to organizers, this event will not only provide invaluable training for local law enforcement, medical personnel, advocates and prosecution teams in the area on child abuse and trauma, but it is an opportunity for the community to learn more about helping the children in their lives.

Keynote speakers from across the United States as well as leaders in their respected fields will present on such topics as Overcoming Burnout, Evaluating Trauma in Physical Abuse Cases, ADHD-ODD vs Trauma, and Advocating for those that have been trafficked.  Finally, Loving’s very own Superintendent, Lee White, will be presenting on how to best serve those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Carlsbad’s Cavern City Advocacy Center is an outstanding organization. Please support this excellent event.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
