Update 1-3-21

Carlsbad’s Shooting Range is an under the radar gem of this community. Located at 314 N. Happy Valley Road, it’s a very popular location for local residents and visitors.

The Carlsbad Police Department has its training range at the Shooting Range as well, and the facility recently underwent a major renovation. Members of the Carlsbad Police Department use this range for their certifications and qualifications. There’s brand new turf at the range and automated, moving targets.

The new range is now complete out to the 50-yard line and there are plans to complete out to the 100-yard-line in February.

The City’s Public Works Department assisted with trenching, bringing in millings, and with all of the wiring for the moving targets. Other individuals and companies who helped make it possible were BDS (Louie Barnes), Southeast Readi-Mix (Jerry Rogers), Xcel Energy (Mike Suggs), BNSF (Martin Adams), Intrepid (Robert Baldridge) and James Hamilton Construction/Dark Canyon Quarry (Ed Godfrey).

We were proud to assist our police department with the development of this state of the art range. The Carlsbad Shooting Range is managed by Public Works through the Parks and Recreation Department.

We’re also very proud of our new Carlsbad Police Department substation, which is located off of 4200 block of National Parks Highway. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The purpose of this substation is to increase public access and accessibility. Members of the Carlsbad Police Department volunteered their off time getting the substation ready for the transition. A new sign has been put up at the substation and it is going very well.

With the New Year upon us, many families are still struggling with paying rent and utilities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We want to make sure Carlsbad residents are aware of options available to them. Rental and utility assistance is available through a program called the Emergency Rental Assistance Program. Eligible households may receive up to 15 months of assistance, plus an additional three months if the extra time is needed to ensure housing stability. Applicants may apply through the online portal at info@renthelpnm.org or by mailing DFA, 407 Galisteo, Santa Fe, NM 87501, Attention ERAP. This program is for families who have been impacted directly by the COVID-19 pandemic and whose household income falls under the Housing Cost Assistance Program Income Limits.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
