Update 12-11-21

Cold weather is expected again throughout the weekend. The Carlsbad Community of Hope Center has activated its emergency shelter at the resource center, 1314 S. Canal St. Hours are 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. They will be serving a hot meal just after 7 p.m. and a breakfast burrito in the morning. This is a shelter for individuals who need to get out of the cold, but who don’t have any place to go. Thank you to Robert and Patricia Jacquez for their incredible dedication to Carlsbad’s citizens in need.  You can reach the Community of Hope at (575) 200-1377 or hopenm@hotmail.com

Another local business has been busy helping those in need. This week, CNB Bank announced that gifts for 51 CASA kids were purchased. The bank has been holding this program for the past 27 years, but this was the highest number of children ever served. Thank you to Jay Jenkins and everyone with CNB.

The United Way of Eddy County is also raffling off a mountain bike from Zia Bike & Board Shop to help Pat and Sherry Click Ellis with costs incurred with rebuilding their home, which was destroyed in a fire. Tickets may be purchased at the United Way office. A drawing will be held Dec. 23. The nonprofit is also collecting donations to help the Ellis family.

Anyone else who wants to let us know about some of their philanthropic efforts can contact us at mayor.office@cityofcarlsbadnm.com or (575) 887-1191. We love sharing these local stories.

Here are a few key upcoming dates concerning the City of Carlsbad.

  • Don’t forget that the Riverwalk Recreation Center will be holding its annual Christmas Party for everyone on Dec. 20 from 5-7 p.m. This will include a live music performance by the Riverbed. The Rec Center is located at 400 Riverwalk Drive.
  • The City of Carlsbad will be closed on Thursday, Dec. 23 and Friday, Dec. 24, for the Christmas holiday. The City of Carlsbad will be closed on Dec. 31, 2021, for the New Year Holiday.
  • On the solid waste side, our department will run regular routes on Dec. 24 but will be off on Dec. 25. The convenience station, located at 301 E. Plaza, will be open on Dec. 24 but will be closed on Christmas Day and on Dec. 26. The solid waste department will handle regular pickup on New Year’s Day, but the convenience station will be closed that day. The station will re-open Jan. 2.

Finally, we’re very pleased to announce that construction at the intersection of Cherry Lane and Sandy Lane has been concluded, and all roadblocks have been removed. This is excellent news.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
