Update 12-6-21

Weekend hours have been restored at the Carlsbad Public Library and at the Riverwalk Recreation Center. Hours for our library are now 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday and Friday/Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hours at the Riverwalk Recreation Center are now 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  We’re so glad to be able to offer more extensive hours to our residents, and we are also working hard to do so at other facilities as well. The Riverwalk Recreation Center offers numerous activities and is a great place for indoor basketball if the weather isn’t cooperating outside. The Center is going to have a huge annual Christmas party for the public on Dec. 20 from 5-7 p.m. featuring a performance by the River Bed and guest appearances from numerous special characters. Thanks to Renee Madrid, Wanda Aguilar and everyone at the Rec Center for all of their hard work.

The memorial service for judge and professor David Redford on Saturday was very well done. You can view it on the City’s Facebook page if you weren’t able to attend.  Thank you to everyone who helped organize it, especially Rev. David Prell, Sal Salcido and members of Redford’s family. During the service, many of Redford’s students came forward and told stories about how he motivated them to continue with their studies. He would spend hours with individual students, which is something they will remember for the rest of their lives.  We’re reminded over and over about what a difference a good educator can make in the lives of his or her students. There’s a reason that the number one profession in our Hall of Fame is teacher- and Carlsbad has been fortunate to have so many good teachers.

It was a good week for Carlsbad basketball. Carlsbad’s Cavegirls won the Artesia tournament with a 37-27 victory over Riverside on Saturday. The Cavegirls also beat Bel Air, 36-15 and Goddard, 66-38 and now have a 5-2 record.

Carlsbad’s boys won their final game in Artesia, 64-37, against Deming on Saturday. The Cavemen also beat Alamogordo, 41-34 but lost a nailbiter to Rio Rancho, 44-43 on Thursday.  The Cavemen only have a single loss this year. They play at Goddard on Tuesday. Thank you to our neighbors in Artesia for always doing a great job with their annual City of Champions Tournament.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
