Update 12-2-21

We want to make sure that everyone starts 2022 off on a good note. To help ensure everyone’s safety, our Carlsbad Municipal Transit System will be offering free safe rides from 6 p.m. Dec. 31 through 2 a.m. Jan. 1. We will have two transit vans out that night – each with a driver and someone to take calls.

How does it work? Just call (575) 887-2121. We encourage pre-registration any time before New Year’s Eve. We’ll pick you up from your residence (within city limits) and take you to your desired location. You call us again when you are ready to go home. The City of Carlsbad is proud to assist the Eddy County DWI Program in ensuring that everyone has a safe and happy New Year by keeping impaired drivers off the streets.  COVID-19 safety precautions will be in place.

Thank you to Transit Director Josh Moore and everyone with Transit for working hard to make sure all of our residents make it home safely. If you would like to learn more about our daily transit routes, please visit https://cityofcarlsbadnm.com/departments/community-development/carlsbad-municipal-transit-system/

You’ll also soon be seeing some big plans in 2022 with the Chamber of Commerce’s Age Friendly Communities Council. This effort was originally organized by Janell Whitlock and led to our successfully obtaining a designation as an Age Friendly Community. Jeanie Watson is doing an excellent job of continuing this effort and honoring all of Janell’s hard work.  Events on the horizon include casino trips, organized hikes and a Valentine’s Day dance. We look forward to assisting the Chamber with these exciting opportunities.

The New Mexico Oil and Gas Association sent out a press release this week with some updated information about the impact of the industry on the state. According to NMOGA, oil and natural gas provided New Mexico with a record $5.3 billion in tax revenue and accounted for 35% of the state’s general fund. This was a record amount. This included $1.04 billion going to public education and $275 million going to institutions of higher learning. We hope that our entire Legislature will remain well aware of this when they meet in 2022.
