As Carlsbad has expanded, so has the need for additional first responder support. Last week, we opened the Carlsbad Police Department’s new substation on the 4200 block of National Parks Highway, next to the Quality Inn & Suites.
The goal of this substation is to increase accessibility and to help us better serve the public. Public hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Members of the public wanting to file a report can buzz in at the front door. Thank you to the Carlsbad Police Department and everyone for all of the hard work on this project. We will hold a grand opening and ribbon cutting at a future date.
The Carlsbad Cavemen and Cavegirls competed in the state cross country meet over the weekend. Leading the way for the Cavemen were Rafael Espinoza and Liam Nelson, who finished the 5K with nearly identical times of 20:28.40 and 20:28.60. Luke Peters finished third for the Cavemen.
Volcano Vista High School won the state race, followed by Rio Rancho and Cleveland.
Makayla Jefferson had the best finish for the Cavegirls. She finished 60th with a time of 23:39. Raeann Carrasco and Kennedy Johns finished 86th and 87th, respectively. Volcano Vista also won the girls’ side of the race. Congratulations to all of our athletes on their fall season.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation is currently in the design development stage for the NM 31 and NM 128 projects. The NM 31 portion of the project extends 22 miles from its junction US 285 to US 62, while the NM 128 portion extends from NM 31 through Jal to the Texas state line. We encourage our residents to keep up to date on this project- as it is obviously very important to the road safety of the area. Finally, there is a public workshop on re-use of produced water planned for 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at New Mexico State University—Carlsbad’s Instructional Center. We know many of our local energy industry partners, including Chevron, have been active participants in this ongoing discussion, which will focus on technologies that exist to treat this water for use by industry or agriculture. This should be an informative event for those who are able to attend.
