Update 11-6-21

The Carlsbad Cavegirls finished second in the state in the 5A soccer tournament, following a 1-0 loss to Cibola on Saturday.  It was a very physical game, with many fans on the Carlsbad side expressing frustration with some of the calls and the lack of calls. The Cavegirls kept their heads up throughout the game and the season, and they should be very proud of everything they accomplished this year. It was great getting to meet with them before their bus left on Thursday. They finished with a record of 20-3. We suspect that we’ll be hearing a lot more about some of Carlsbad’s players soon – both in terms of future aspirations and with regards to next year’s season.

Cibola ‘s Brooke Volza scored the game’s only goal eight minutes into the game at UNM Soccer Stadium.

Carlsbad’s varsity football team ended its season with a 49-17 loss to Volcano Vista on Friday night in the first round of the 6A playoffs.  Thank you to the Cavemen for fighting hard throughout this season.

In other sports news, the Cavemen qualified six runners for the state cross-country tournament on Nov. 6, while the Cavegirls qualified three. The races took place Saturday afternoon at Albuquerque Academy. We’ll have results next week. Congratulations to the following Carlsbad High School runners.

Mikayla Jefferson, RaeAnn Carrasco and Kennedy Johns, all who qualified for the girls. Isaac Williamson, Liam Nelson,  Luke Peters,  Sawyer Johnson,  Rafael Espinosa, and Jeffrey Lara all qualified for the boys. Best of luck to the Cavemen and Cavegirls running in state.

With fall sports season winding down, that means, of course that winter sports season will soon be in full swing. We will post some updates on the basketball schedule and other winter sports as they become available.

Congratulations again to everyone with Brittany’s Hope – the outstanding fundraiser raised nearly $50,000 on Friday during Brittany’s Day. This money will be used to help families of Carlsbad residents who are battling cancer.

We have received word that a memorial date for Judge David Redford has been set for 11 a.m. Dec. 4 with Pastor David Prell officiating at Blodgett Street Baptist Church. We know numerous members of our community have been asking us for details, as they would like to officially say farewell to this well loved professor, judge and community member.

Please have an excellent weekend and remember that we will have a Veteran’s Day parade and ceremony on November 11 this year. The parade will leave the CMS administration building at 9:30 a.m. with a ceremony to follow at the Carlsbad Veterans Memorial Park.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
