Update 11-5-21

Friday is the annual “Brittany’s Hope Day” fundraiser day in Carlsbad, which was a fund established in memory of Brittany Martin by members of her family and her friends. Money donated to Brittany’s Hope is used to benefit indigent cancer patients in the Carlsbad area who are in need of support.  Every year, Brittany’s Hope provides hundreds of thousands of dollars to cancer patients in the area.

What’s best about this effort is how the money all stays local.  Alana Gregory-Carreon and the outstanding Faith, Hope & Love Foundation spearhead this event, with a great deal of support from Brittany’s friends and family, especially Lane Martin.  Both Java Nick’s Coffee Hut and the Blue House hosted this year’s fundraiser, as money from all purchases made at these locations all go to support this charity. Many other members of the community made or prepared items to sell. Special thanks to Angie May, Brittany’s great friend who now coordinates Brittany’s Hope for the Faith, Hope & Love Foundation.

If you weren’t able to make it to either coffee house on Friday, donations can also always be made to  “Brittany’s Hope” c/o Faith, Hope & Love Foundation, 933 N. Canal Street, Carlsbad, NM 88220.

The Assistance League of Carlsbad is holding its annual Christmas Tree Auction on Nov. 5 as well. All proceeds go to support the Assistance League’s Operation School Bell and other local charities. You can view videos of all of the beautiful trees this year at https://www.facebook.com/ALCarlsbad

There’s another big charitable event coming up in Carlsbad – The annual fishing derby, which is a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad. This year’s derby will be held Nov. 20 and 21, with registration taking place at Lower Tansil Dam at 1 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday. There’s a $10 entry fee, but kids under 12 are free. The prize fish this year will be worth $1,000. Thank you to J.R. Doporto for his part in organizing this excellent fundraiser.

We have a little more information on our new college board. On Thursday, board members for Southeast New Mexico College drew numbers to determine how long their first term would be. This was done to ensure that future elections are staggered. Mark Cage and Tiffany Frintz each drew six year terms, while Bill Murrill and Ned Elkins drew four year terms. Sarah Jo Bowman drew a two year term. Our new college board will take their oaths of office in early January.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
