It will be another busy week in Carlsbad, dominated, of course, by a wide assortment of Halloween and fall festival activities this upcoming weekend.
Many churches and organizations are holding trunk-or-treat or similar activities throughout the week as well. The City of Carlsbad and the “Hometown Holidays” Facebook Page have posted compilations of these lists to the best of our ability.
A few of the biggest community-sponsored events will be as follows:
On Oct. 28, New Mexico State University-Carlsbad will host a “Hallowpooloza” from 3-6 p.m. at 1500 University Drive featuring outdoor trick-or-treating.
On Friday, Oct. 29, Carlsbad MainStreet will hold its annual downtown fall festival from 4-6 p.m. This event features business-to-business trick-or-treating, a costume contest and music by DJ Cool Arrow. The Carlsbad Police Department and Carlsbad Fire Department will also have a Trunk or Treat from 4-6 p.m. at 401 S. Halagueno Street.
On Saturday, Oct. 30, please visit the beach bandshell from 2-6 p.m. to participate in the Cavern City Bat Flight and Fest. This event will include trick-or-treating at the beach from 5 p.m. until dark.
Finally, Sunday, Oct. 31, will be the day for traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating in Carlsbad. After consideration, we did decide to leave Halloween on Sunday this year, recognizing that there were advantages and disadvantages either way.
In sports news, the Carlsbad Cavegirl varsity soccer team picked up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming state soccer tournament. That means they’ll get a first round bye and play the winner of the Volcano Vista and Clovis game on Tuesday. The Hobbs Lady Eagles also earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament.
We had some more good news on Friday – Carlsbad’s varsity football team beat Organ Mountain, 34-20, in the final home game of the year. The Cavemen will finish their district tour next Friday at Hobbs.
Finally, the Carlsbad Cavegirl varsity volleyball team plays Roswell on Thursday. Best of luck to all of our teams wrapping up the fall sports season.
Speaking of sports, we want to thank one more extremely important person who assisted us with last week’s energy summit. Baseball star and Carlsbad Hall of Famer Shane Andrews helps every year with making our VIP guests feel at home when they come to visit. Shane and our Sports Superintendent, Steve Garza, went above and beyond this year to making sure that our guest, Tony Dorsett, had a great visit in Carlsbad. Shane has been an outstanding friend to Carlsbad, and we’re lucky to have him here.
