Update 10-22-21

In addition to being an informative event, our annual energy summit is a great opportunity for Carlsbad to host some of the industry’s biggest names.

We had visitors here from Wyoming, Oklahoma and Texas, as well as from across New Mexico. We were honored by guests including Vicki Hollub, the CEO of Occidental Petroleum, former Texas Tech Chancellor Kent Hance, and, of course, pro-bowl legend Tony Dorsett.  We also enjoyed having the Brooks Brothers, Shiloh Road and Hanson Yates as our special guests during our sponsor dinner. It is always great to see former Governor Susana Martinez. Caroline Buerkle represented Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, who had scheduling problems and could not attend.

There are so many people to thank for helping with the 2021 Carlsbad Energy Summit. Our City workers, especially those in Facility Maintenance and at the Riverwalk Recreation Center, worked tirelessly to make sure everything ran smoothly. Special thanks to the Carlsbad Community Foundation for helping with our web page and serving as our fiscal agent for this educational event.

Thanks to our speakers, which included representatives from the State of New Mexico, as well as Eric Ormond (Crestwood), Josh Viets (ConocoPhillips), Clay Gaspar (Devon Energy) and Eileen McGrath-Conner (Chevron). Voncile King, the Rev. John Burke, the Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard and the Carlsbad Police Department Honor Guard were all outstanding.

The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors helped everyone find their seat, and Missi Currier and Ekta Bhakta put in a lot of extra effort to set it all up. Chad Ingram and the Chamber of Commerce helped provide boat rides to some of our out of town visitors and made the Carousel House beautiful for our sponsor dinner. Thank you to the Ballards, Carlsbad Municipal Schools, and the school district’s wonderful culinary arts program for preparing the meals, and Lucy’s for providing the drinks at the sponsor dinner.

Special thanks to Raul Quintana for supporting us this year and many years in the past, and to all of the members of our summit committee.  Our Early College High School BPA students and students with the Loving Skills USA program worked hard to serve our meals. Volunteers from McDonalds were the first to arrive Thursday morning to help set up breakfast. We had local hotels and local radio stations offer discounts and donate air time to help us out. Of course, nothing would have been possible without our numerous sponsors. As we said during the event, our energy sponsors are special for the support they provide to this community throughout the year.

We have an outstanding intern program, and our intern this year, Alexis Long, did a great job helping with our speakers at the summit. Our previous intern, Valeria Quesada, was an incredible help as always, as was recent graduate Ileana Braddock.

A special thank you to City of Carlsbad Administrative Assistant Cheyenne Methola and PIO Kyle Marksteiner for working countless hours on this project, and, of course, a very special thank you to our master of ceremonies and Summit Chair, Danny Fletcher, who is a major reason why our summit is such a success every year. We’re already talking about next year’s summit and look forward to working on it.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
