Sports Update 9-13-21

It was another good weekend for the undefeated Cavegirl soccer team, who won two very tough matches. The Cavegirls beat La Cueva on Friday in overtime, 2-1, and then edged Rio Rancho, 1-0. Rio Rancho was ranked first in the state going into Saturday’s game, while the Cavegirls had been ranked second. The Cavegirls host Las Cruces on Friday.

The Carlsbad Cavemen varsity football team earned a 19-0 Homecoming win over Coronado on Friday. The Cavemen, 2-1, will play Roswell on Friday.

Carlsbad’s varsity boys soccer team lost to Lovington, 6-0. The Cavemen will play Highand on Friday. The Cavegirl volleyball team lot to Silver on Saturday, 3-1. They’ll play at Portales on Sept. 16 and host Mayfield on Sept. 18.

Carlsbad’s cross country team has a home meet scheduled for this Saturday at the beach bandshell.

Finally, Trevor Rogers went 4.1 innings in a 6-2 loss to the Braves on Friday. He allowed four runs but picked up six strikeouts.

It was a great weekend in Carlsbad, with multiple wonderful activities taking place around town. Friday’s Stranded concert went very well, and a large number of people toured the developing Cavern Theatre while listening to the music. Thank you to Carlsbad MainStreet and the Pearl on the Pecos for organizing the event.

It was an honor to participate in the outstanding Sept. 11 ceremony on Saturday. The entire event was very special, but one of the best moments was when County Commissioner Ernie Carlson and I had the chance to present a plaque to Dr. Kim Lark. Dr. Lark brought her rescue dogs to the Pentagon after the tragedy of 9-11. She and her rescue dogs have continued to serve at events in the twenty years since, including Hurricane Katrina. This community is so fortunate to have Dr. Lark and we appreciate her constant dedication to public service. The Jericho Walk, organized by Patricia and Robert Jacquez, had an excellent attendance, as did Eric Armendariz’s 16th of September parade and ceremony. Finally, thank you to Kevin Pence and everyone with First Baptist Church for organizing their great car show on Sunday.

Our summer concert series will be back on this weekend, with Charlie Ingraham performing at the Water Park gazebo from 7-9 p.m. The Carlsbad Water Park will also remain open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Finally, the Pearl of the Pecos Arts & Culture District is hosting “Heritagefest” at the Halageuno Arts Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include music, food vendors, craft booths a cornhole tournament and much more. Please have a great week.

Sincerely, Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
