Update 8-16-21

Thank you for your patience concerning our new utility bill system. This has been a two-year process in development, but we know there has been some confusion during the transition over the past few weeks. The new utility bills are being mailed out on Aug. 17 and will include information on how you can again sign up for online payment. You’ll also have a lot more access to information than you did using the old system. We understand that there’s going to be an adjustment period, and we are not going to do utility cutoffs this month. Thank you to our finance department for working very hard on this very complicated transition.

There’s obviously a great deal of concern about our schools right now – specifically, the fact that the Carlsbad Intermediate School- P.R. Leyva Campus and Carlsbad High School have moved into a remote learning plan for the next few weeks as a COVID-19 precautionary measure. While there has been a great deal of discussion about this issue over the weekend, what needs to be stressed is that our excellent teachers did a remarkable job adjusting over the weekend to prepare for Monday. Our classroom teachers continue to find a way to serve their students. Please keep all of Carlsbad’s teachers, students and parents deep in your prayers, and let’s hope for things to get back to normal as quickly as possible.

Another former Carlsbad resident in the news – Travis Dorado learned some of his trade right here before moving on and becoming a camera and video operator for ESPN. He was recently recognized by ESPN for his creativity – he put an addition on his video camera to make it look like a ship from Star Wars. Dorado graduated from Carlsbad High School in 2005. His mother is a teacher at Carlsbad High School. Congratulations to the entire Dorado family.

Just a reminder that the Department of Health vaccine clinics are taking place from 8-11 a.m. Monday and Friday at the civic center. There were 120 vaccines provided at the clinic on Friday, and that many more were expected on Monday. Vaccines are also being offered at the Farmer’s Market this Thursday.

We had to cancel our Charlie Ingraham concert this past Saturday due to the weather, but we are planning to reschedule the event to September. Talented local musician Cody Zane Wells is scheduled to perform this Saturday from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the water park gazebo.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
