Update 8-2-21

Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in Janell Whitlock’s funeral service on Monday. We will continue to miss our friend and dedicated community member for a very long time. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carlsbad Community Foundation, https://carlsbad.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create?funit_id=1425, 114 S. Canyon Street, Carlsbad, NM 88220

This weekend’s weather was the nice kind of rain. We received a report of an inch of rain at Carlsbad’s airport, though there was a higher level at the northern end of town. There were no major road closures or damage caused by this weekend’s rain reported to us. In fact, we had a 65-team softball tournament at the Bob Forrest Youth Sports Complex that went very well, despite a few rainouts on Friday.

The Carlsbad Water Park will be moving into its late summer schedule following this weekend. That means we will be open Tuesday through Sunday this week, but we will be closed Aug. 9 through 13 and then re-open for the weekend. We do this when school goes back in session because most of our lifeguards are in class. Despite the weather, we’ve had a successful summer at the Carlsbad Water Park.

It was very busy weekend in Carlsbad and Eddy County, with activities including the county fair, the United Way shooting fundraiser, the Assistance League’s clothing giveaway and Trade Days at the Civic Center. The City of Carlsbad was especially proud to be a part of Gastroschisis Awareness Day. Congratulations to Anthony Santo, Kesley Santo, Camden Santo and baby Colsten Santo for having this important event.

Thank you to Lastchild for performing Saturday night as part of our summer concert series. Up this Saturday, from 7-9 p.m., will be Alberto Madrid. Alberto is a very talented musician from Midland who plays a little bit of everything – Jazz, Country, Rock, R&B, Classical and Latin Groves. He’ll be playing at the gazebo near the Carlsbad Water Park in this free concert. Thanks again to Brandon Chandler for making tis possible.

Best of luck to local fitness expert Justin Northcutt, who is one of 8 finalists in a Men’s Physique competition that began with 25,600 competitors from across the United States. You can vote for Justin to be selected as “Mr. Health and Fitness” by clicking here:  https://featured.muscleandfitness.com/2021/justin-nor. Voting ends Thursday evening and Mr. Northcutt appeared to be in third place on Monday morning.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
