Update 7-27-21

It feels like we’ve had some of the craziest weather we’ve ever had this summer. Monday’s very sudden storm only added about ¾ of an inch of rain, but the mixture of hail and strong winds caused a considerable amount of property damage around town. We had to remove a tree from the street on Valverde, and there were a number of other trees uprooted, in particular on Mesa Street. Thankfully, there were no weather related injuries reported, that we are aware of at this time. Thank you to our public works crews who responded very quickly to the most serious public safety concerns.

The Carlsbad Community Theatre is back in action. The theatre is kicking off the 2021 season with a Merienda at the theatre at 4713 National Parks Highway at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14. The theatre will be selling season and musical tickets, offering food and handing out its annual schedule.  An upcoming musical production “The Fantasticks” is scheduled for Aug. 27, 28, 29 and September 3,4 and 5.  Linda Servold will be the musical director and the cast will consist of Terry Burns, Tessa Folks, Reagan Van Soest, Daniel Miller, Casey Gadbury, Paul Loftis, Paul Cox and Dave Kump. We know many of these individuals are thrilled about getting back on stage.

For more information, please visit the Carlsbad Community Theatre Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/carlsbadcommunitytheatre.  Please continue to support this and all of our other arts and culture events around town.

We’re very proud that our community has a close friendship with two national parks – both Carlsbad Caverns National Park and Guadalupe Mountains National Park. This week, the Guadalupe Mountains opened opportunities for group campsite reservations at its www.recreation.gov website. This is the first time that the Guadalupe Mountains has used an online reservation system. Right now, this online process is for the Pine Springs and Dog Canyon group sites, but the park is moving forward with offering other campsites online later this year.

While we’ve thanked many of the people who helped with our Independence Day celebration, one additional individual really deserves special mention. During her visit here, in addition to helping us with our parade and World War II ceremony, former Governor Susana Martinez very generously made a donation of $1,000 in support of CARC Inc. We’re fortunate to have Martinez as such a close friend to our community. Additionally, we’re extremely blessed to have CARC here as a world-class facility.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
