The Carlsbad Cavegirls lost to Rio Rancho Cleveland, 3-0, in their softball state championship Saturday at the University of New Mexico Softball Complex.  The Cavegirls fought hard and had multiple scoring opportunities in their bid for a 17th state title. Thank you to everyone who turned out Saturday morning for their sendoff to Albuquerque.

Carlsbad’s track team also competed in state over the weekend. Highlights included Dane Naylor finishing fourth in the Boys 110 Meter Hurdles and sixth in the 300 Meter Hurdles. Carlsbad’s 4X200 Relay team placed fifth, while the 4X100 took seventh. Eli Asay placed 8th in the 100 Meter Dash and the 4X400 Relay finished ninth.  Devin McWright finished seventh in the Triple Jump finals and Garren Gossett placed 12th. Tylen Gonzalez finished 8th in Discus.

For the girls, Brynlee Daughtry finished sixth in the 100 Meter Hurdles and the Cavegirls placed 16th in the 4X800 Relay. In more sports news, former Carlsbad High School standout Trevor Rogers will pitch on Tuesday against the Phillies. Trevor is working to pick up his ninth win of the season. Carlsbad also hosted a large disc golf tournament this weekend and drew dozens of participants. The day-long, league sanctioned tournament began at MLK Jr. Park.

Congratulations to Sheriff Mark Cage, who was recently elected as the Sergeant-at-Arms during the National Sheriff’s Association Annual Conference. He is the first New Mexico Sheriff to be an officer in the organization. We’re all fortunate to have this local representation at the national level.
