Civic Center and Water Park Update, 6-24-21

It’s great to have the Walter Gerrells Performing Arts and Exhibition Center back in action. A job fair held there last week was very successful and an upcoming “Trade Days” event is certainly going to draw a large crowd.

“The Vintage Cactus: Trade Days” is being set up by residents from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 31 at the exhibition center. It will feature multiple vendors, boutiques, craft, gift shops and more. Admission is free and the first 100 shoppers will receive a gift bag. For more information, please call (575) 499-4911 or email vintagecactustradedays@gmail.com.

What a great opportunity for some of our small businesses and local crafters to formally move out of the COVID-19 phase and get back to business.

We’re already receiving a great deal of interest in reserving the civic center. For information on reserving the Walter Gerrells Performing Arts and Exhibition Center, please contact Community Development at (575) 887-1191 ext. 7963 or email lqornelas@cityofcarlsbadnm.com

It didn’t go quite the way it was planned – our first “evening” swim this summer planned at the Carlsbad Water Park was postponed due to lightning. We will be looking for other days this summer where we can expand our hours to 8 p.m. and already plan to do so on July 7, 14 and 28. We will publish reminders of these upcoming “evening swims.”

Our goal is always to find more opportunities to open the park for more hours to serve more people, but we have to balance that goal with staffing limitations. On weekends, the water park is typically used for party reservations from 6-8 p.m., which has been a very popular service.

The Carlsbad High School Athletic Office has asked us to get word out that free physical examinations are being offered for students entering the 7th through 12th grades that will participate in athletics at either middle school or at the high school. These exams will take place from 6-9 p.m. July 29 at the Carlsbad High School gyms, with students entering through the natatorium doorway. You can complete the paperwork by visiting www.carlsbadschools.net and selecting the athletic tab.

Don’t forget that the country band “Red Sky” will be our entertainment for this weekend’s part of our summer concert series. Red Sky will be performing from 7-9 p.m. at the Water Park Gazebo. Our performers on July 3 will all be at the beach bandshell, and we’re excited to have Robin Scott playing at the gazebo when the summer concert series resumes July 10.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
