Update 6-17-21

Save the date: We are currently planning the 2021 Carlsbad Mayor’s Energy Summit for Oct. 21, 2021. Last year’s summit was a virtual event, and it went very well, but we’re looking forward to having an in person event again. The summit was created years ago with the purpose of providing a venue where the residents of Carlsbad can have a better understanding of what to expect from the energy industry. That has never been more important than it is this year, as there have certainly been a significant number of changes taking place over the past two years.

We will have more information about what we’ve planned for this year’s summit soon, but we are planning to include author Alex Epstein, who wrote “The Moral Case For Fossil Fuels” as one of our guest speakers.

We also had a great meeting this week with XTO Energy’s Rick Cannon and Courtney Wardlaw, who is XTO’s Public and Government Affairs advisor for the area. Cannon and his wife, Rebecca, have been outstanding Carlsbad residents since their arrival here a few years ago. Rebecca has been especially involved with MainStreet and our library. Courtney has been in the Permian Basin for some time, but her responsibility will now include Carlsbad. XTO had a very optimistic message in terms of continued growth in the Delaware Basin and in their company’s commitment to Carlsbad. We look forward to working with them as Carlsbad takes on a larger and larger role in our energy industry.

We also listened to a very informative presentation on Tuesday by Permian Basin Counseling & Guidance, who is now operating in Carlsbad.  They will be helping to treat issues related to anxiety, grief, suicidal thoughts, relationships and other topics. They are trained to assist veterans as well. This was a project set up by the Permian Strategic Partnership and resulted in more counseling opportunities for residents. Thank you to D’Nae Johnson, Dusty McCoy, Janell Knowlton, Rebecca Zapata and Margarita Ramirez for the visit. Julia Kiewit, Molly Young and Heather Brewer also joined us from PSP. Members of our legislative delegation (Rep. Cathrynn Brown, Rep. Jim Townsend and Sen. Gay Kernan) were also present and asked some excellent questions. We wish to welcome Claudia Silva to the Carlsbad Current Argus and to our community. According to the Current-Argus, Claudia will be covering education issues in Carlsbad as a Journalism Fellow. There’s a lot of news to cover in this growing community, and we’re excited about more local coverage.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
