There were some concerns expressed over the weekend about overgrown weeds at and near Cherry Lane Park, which the City of Carlsbad took over several months ago from the County, as well as other easements. While the recent rains have certainly caused a lot of rapid growth across Carlsbad over the past few weeks, that is absolutely no excuse. It is up to us to set high standards by maintaining all of our outdoor facilities. We always appreciate efforts to call issues such as this to our attention and take complete responsibility in making sure our parks look great.

Please continue to report any specific instances such as this through our 311 program. You can call 311 from a landline or (575) 887-1200 from a cell phone. You can also email 311@cityofcarlsbadnm.com or complete an online form at https://cityofcarlsbadnm.com/departments/3-1-1/citizen-action-line/. We also want to hear about occurrences of graffiti, so that we can clean those quickly as well.

Of course, if you ever feel that we are not responding to your concerns promptly, please contact me directly at (575) 887-1191 or mayor.office@cityofcarlsbdnm.com. We want everyone to know that we take this issue very seriously.

Trevor Rogers was named the National League Rookie of the Month in May, an honor he also received in April. Talk about a great start to a rookie season. Rogers received a no decision Saturday against the Pirates after allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five batters in six innings. He currently has a 1.97 earned run average in 12 appearances.

Everyone is very excited about being able to have events again, and we’ve had a lot of interest in renting facilities such as the beach bandshell and the Riverview Shelters. The park this weekend was covered from end to end with birthday parties, car shows and other events. While picnic tables and many smaller locations are first-come, first served, some of our more popular facilities are available by reservation. In some instances, such as the annual Relay for Life event, organizations will obtain special permission to reserve a larger area of the park for their event. Our goal is to allow everyone fair access to our beautiful park area. For information on reserving these facilities, please call our planning office at 885-1185. We hope you had a great weekend. As a reminder, our summer concert series starts this upcoming Saturday at the gazebo near the Carlsbad Water Park. JJ Aguilar will be performing from 7-9 p.m. and we hope to see you there.
