Update 5-19-21

Today’s salute to service is to Bill Barnhart. For those of you who get up early in the morning, Bill can often be spotted along the side of the road, picking up trash wherever he sees it. In fact, Bill is also a fitness enthusiast who jogs in between plastic bags. Bill is a member of our cleanup committee and on our Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. His wife, Veronica, serves on our library board and on our beautification committee.  They are both great people on top of everything else. Someone recently said they wish we had 1,000 Bill and Veronia Barnharts in Carlsbad, and we all agree.

COVID-19 Update: Eddy County remained a solid Turquoise when the state’s gating criteria was updated on Wednesday. According to the New Mexico Department of Health, Eddy County had a cases per 100,000 rate of 4 and a positivity rate of 1.60%, which means we continued to meet both gating criteria. We had a fully vaccinated rate of 31.10%, but we have also been informed that some corrections are being made which will increase that percentage. All counties in the state, with the exception of Chaves, are currently Turquoise. There were 3 COVID-19 cases reported for Eddy County on Wednesday. Carlsbad Medical Center reported zero new positives on Wednesday.  We strongly believe Eddy County will remain Turquoise until state restrictions are fully lifted in a few weeks.

Trevor Rogers pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowed five hits, walked two and struck out eight to lead the Marlins to a 3-1 win over the Phillies Wednesday night. Rogers is now 6-2 with a 1.74 ERA, putting him tied for second in having the most wins in major league baseball. He also hit a single in the top of the seventh inning.

Finally, the family of Pete Subia will be holding an event to honor the well-loved radio DJ from 2-7 p.m. May 23 at the beach bandshell. Pete was the voice of the “Cruizin the Oldies with Pete” show on 106.1 FM and he amassed thousands of followers across the country.  Before the event, a “Last Cruize” has been scheduled from the cemetery to the bandshell. After the cruise, a DJ and food trucks are going to be near the bandshell and “Cruzin the Oldies” shirts will be sold as a fundraiser. The Governor has even issued a proclamation declaring it to be “Pete Subia Day” statewide. Thank you to Lorene Subia and everyone who worked hard on preparing this special recognition.

Sincerely, Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
