Update 5-4-21

At some point in the next few weeks, you may receive a call from someone wanting to ask you a few questions about Carlsbad’s college going independent. This is not a scam call or any solicitation- a community survey about the college is an important part of the upcoming transition into Southeast New Mexico College. We encourage you to participate in this survey and share your feelings on this issue. Your answers will help our college, our higher education task force, and the state’s Higher Education Department all formulate a plan for a smooth transition. We certainly appreciate ideas about what classes and services can be offered by the new college and look forward to these future opportunities.

We are still all heartbroken over the news that the Carlsbad Cavemen won’t be able to participate in the basketball playoffs this year due to a positive COVID-19 test. Additionally, the Cavegirls weren’t able to play their final game of the season due to a COVID-19 positive of a player. Our basketball players should certainly all still be very proud of their accomplishments this year. It was a very successful winter sports season. Congratulations to Coach Zumbrun and Coach Enloe and their teams.

Our COVID-19 vaccine clinics are continuing every Monday at the civic center. Please register at https://cvvaccine.nmhealth.org if you have not received a vaccine but would like one.

Moderate winds and a little rain have helped firefighters over the past few days with containing the Three Rivers Fire. There was no fire growth reported yesterday. While the fire is not out, some crews are demobilizing back to their homes as it does appear to be under control. A closure order remains in place for a portion of the White Mountains Wilderness. Additionally, despite the recent rain, the fire risk for the area remains very high. Please continue to use caution.

We know we’ve been providing a large number of Trevor Rogers updates lately, but the good news keeps coming in. Rogers was named the MLB Rookie of the Month for April on Monday for the National League. Yermin Mercedes received the honor for the American League.

Rogers went 3-1 with a 1.29 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 28 innings over five starts for the Marlins – his honor was very well deserved.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Day! Our teachers have obviously had to adjust to so much over the past couple years, but our teachers were certainly going above and beyond even before the COVID-19 outbreak. There’s a reason that the most common profession in our Hall of Fame is an educator – teachers make a difference.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
