Thank you to all of our first responders who did an excellent job containing the structure fire that took place at the Vista Del Rio Apartment Complex Monday morning. Spring winds made containing the fire very difficult, but members of the Carlsbad Fire Department and local volunteer agencies were able to quickly contain the blaze. We’re very relieved to learn that there were no serious injuries or loss of life, but, of course, a number of families have been displaced by this fire. The Eddy County Office of Emergency Management and the Red Cross are coordinating relief efforts.
The loss of an entire apartment building makes this one of the larger structure fires we’ve had in Carlsbad in some time, and our fire department responded to several other fires over the weekend. The wind and dry air makes the fire risk very high – please be extremely careful in terms of following all fire safety guidelines.
We had some great news on the sports front his weekend. The Carlsbad Cavegirls scored in the final minute of play to beat Albuquerque High, 1-0, for the state soccer championship. Alexa Dugan scored the goal on an assist from Allie Myers. The Cavegirls finished the season undefeated and will certainly remain a major contender in the state for some time. Congratulations again to the team and to Coach Misty Long.
Trevor Rogers also had a great performance over the weekend. The Miami Marlin and former Carlsbad standout pitched 6 scoreless innings on ten strikeouts in a win over the Mets. He now has an earned run average of 1.80.
Congratulations as well to members of the Carlsbad Police Department and Eddy County Sheriff’s Department. Members of the SE Regional Swat Team participated in the 4X4X48 Law Enforcement Torch Run, which was a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. Special thanks to Corporal Orlando Moreno for coordinating this event.
On a less positive note, someone did some damage to Hole #15 at the Lake Carlsbad Municipal Golf Course over the weekend. Based on the photos, someone decided to drive in circles around the course, causing damage to the property. The hole is still playable, but will take some time to complete rehabilitation efforts. Please contact Carlsbad Police Department if you have any information.
