Thank you to everyone who watched our virtual Veteran’s Day celebration on the City’s Facebook page. We had almost 1,500 views by Thursday morning.  It was a wonderful ceremony: thanks again to Master of Ceremonies Alberto Villegas, Sam Plumlee for the invocation, Deanna Hulse-Garringer for singing the National Anthem and Steve Angell for introducing the new Huey Helicopter to the Veterans Park. Please check out the video at https://www.facebook.com/CityofCarlsbadGov.  Finally, thanks again to our City’s welding and construction teams for doing such a great job assisting with the installation of the helicopter, and to the many generous sponsors who made it all possible.

We also received word of another local World War 2 hero. Carlsbad resident Bill Davis served 28 missions in a B-17 as a tailgunner. Thank you for your service, sir. Please continue to let us know of any additional World War 2 veterans in our community.

Ricky Garcia, who runs the Cavemen Strong scholarship program, has let us know that his organization is postponing the annual Cavemen Strong December event at NMSU-C due to COVID-19 restrictions.  Cavemen Strong is an outstanding local program which honors students, coaches, teachers and first responders. Last year, Garcia added a “Comeback Kid” scholarship for individuals who have made great strides in getting their life back together. We’ve enjoyed working with Ricky, who grew up in Carlsbad and now lives in Arizona, and helping him select some of the annual recipients.  Ricky says he plans to reschedule this year’s event for the spring – we look forward to it.

The United Way of Eddy County will be having a Produce and Fresh Food Drive Thru distribution on Friday, Nov. 13. The drive thru in Carlsbad will begin at 10 a.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church. Times are all first come first serve. Please wear a mask while picking up food and do not exit the vehicle. Participants are limited to one box per vehicle. There will also be a food giveaway at 8 a.m. in Artesia at First National Bank.

There were 43 new positive cases announced for Eddy County on Wednesday afternoon and one additional Eddy County death. There were also 60 new positives announced on Tuesday. We have been informed that Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and state officials will host a remote news conference at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13. The conference will be streamed through the Governor’s Facebook page. We do not have any additional information about what new to expect at this time but will provide you an update as it becomes available.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
