Update: 9-16-20 – Groups Looking for Ways to Support Restaurants

There are many people wanting to help out our local restaurants and small businesses. Carlsbad Radio has announced a program through Sept. 23 offering a chance at some free publicity. Listeners are encouraged to post a picture of their dining experience on the business Facebook page, and restaurants are encouraged to do the same. Carlsbad Radio will then help get word out by mentioning participating businesses during their promotional ads. For more information, please call Jerry at 361-1839.

Even though restaurants can now have indoor seating, many of them are taking advantage of our beautiful fall weather by continuing to offer additional patio dining. The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce has been publishing maps of restaurants with patio dining and who offer carryout on its Facebook page and on the Chamber’s web page. Please continue to support our local businesses.

September is also Library Card Sign-Up month, and the Carlsbad Public Library is encouraging everyone to share their superhero moment. Please share a moment from our library that shows how libraries are wonderful and post it on our Facebook page. You can also stop by the library to share your story. One grand prize winner will be picked on Oct. 12.

We would like to offer our condolences to the family of Don Neighbors, especially his wife, Deelona. Don passed away on Sept. 13, 2020.  Don served in the ministry for 30 years. He also worked in the Eddy County road department for 25 years. He was an extremely helpful member of our Disabilities Advisory Board for many years as well.

We participated in the National COVID-19 briefing call with the White House on Wednesday. FEMA administrator Pete Gaynor was the keynote speaker. Gaynor noted that this is the first time in history that all 50 states have issued declarations of emergency at the same time. FEMA also balancing hurricane response issues, wildfire responses and with pandemic efforts. The discussion also included an update on HUD funding for communities with a high risk of eviction, tracking of possible COVID-19 spread as a result of Labor Day weekend, and additional research into treatment and cures.

Trevor Rogers is listed as the probable starter in Miami’s home game against the Boston Red Sox Wednesday afternoon. Going into the game, Trevor has a 1-1 record and a 6.50 ERA, but that’s largely due to two bad innings in last week’s outing. The Marlins are 24-22 and second in the NL East right now. We know Trevor has a great future ahead of him.

Sincerely

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
