Police Department Receives DOJ Grant For COVID-19 Reimbursement

CARLSBAD, N.M. – Carlsbad City Council has approved a grant from the Department of Justice which will allow the Carlsbad Police Department to be reimbursed for $36,914 in expenses related to preventing the spread of coronavirus.

“All municipalities, including our own, are hard-pressed right now with additional expenses and limited resources,” Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway said. “There was a great team effort that went into applying for this grant, and it will be of great help to the city and its residents.”

The grant application went to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance under the Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding Program.

The Carlsbad Police Department plans to devote these funds for reimbursement for decontamination of police units and the police station, for the purchase of additional PPE for officers and for overtime costs associated with coverage related directly to coronavirus-issues.

Mayor Janway credited Police Chief Shane Skinner and Lt. David Testa for putting together the grant application. The Permian Strategic Partnership (PSP), through the assistance of Terry Brunner and the Grants Collective, provided assistance to the City of Carlsbad through project review, editing and packaging the grant application.

In 2019, the Permian Strategic Partnership (PSP) launched a grant writing program in Eddy County to help local governments, school districts and non-profits compete for state, federal and private grant opportunities. This city utilized this program in securing these funds.

“This is great news for the City of Carlsbad, and I want to thank Mayor Janway for his leadership during these unprecedented times, and for his and the city’s continued partnership with the PSP,” said Tracee Bentley, President and CEO of PSP. “These are the types of opportunities this grant writing program was intended to assist with, and we are thankful the City of Carlsbad will have these additional resources to continue keeping our first responders safe.”
